AI Presentations- Juliet Rodriguez

                          AI Presentations

Hi, I'm Juliet Rodriguez and in my public speaking class, we presented different topics regarding AI. The topics that were talked about in reference to AI are social life, entertainment, economy, mental health, education, and sports. Each group had to say: how these topics on AI related to the world now?, what things the government is doing to assist with these issues?, what suggestions we have for the government regarding AI and these topics?,  how is Florida specifically handling these topics?, and what we would like Miami Dade College to do to help navigate these new tools.    I will be discussing what I've learned from my fellow classmates' presentations on AI.

The first group that presented discussed AI in regards to the entertainment industry but also social life. These are great topics to talk about in reference to AI. The first thing they talked about was the entertainment industry, which I was very interested in since I love movies and TV shows.  I was surprised when they mentioned a TV show that I love called “Wanda Vision”. Apparently, a background actress from the show named Alexandria Rubicaba had an experience with AI on the film set of Wanda Vision. Apparently, her and other background actors and extras were being scanned by a series of cameras on metal rigs showing different emotions. The rig scans you and fifteen minutes later a digital replica of Rubicaba was created. This is cool how it does that, but what I later learned it’s actually not so good for the actor being scanned. Since they scan the background actors and extras, they can use that scan in anything they want, but the actors and extras won’t be getting paid for it. This sucks as they put in work to be there and now with the scanning, they will be getting fewer jobs and not nearly enough money. These actors just like Rubicaba are afraid that they will be replaced by AI in the film industry completely, but the studios say that’s not their intention. What I learned is that background actors are more in danger of being replaced by artificial intelligence than big-time actors. Even though AI can benefit a film studio itself, it’s because of artificial intelligence that the ones that help make these films happen although in the background, are being most affected. AI doesn’t only affect the film industry, but the music and art industry. Artists who use AI don’t need as much training as those who are going about the art and music industry traditionally by learning how to play an instrument or paint an image. Now with AI, it can create paintings and artworks for you. AI can also make music without having you play a single note of an instrument. This is interesting as it’s amazing how far technology has advanced, but at the same time, it’s going to make it pointless to even have a career as an artist or musician if a machine can do it all for you. This is sad as this is some peoples’ passion and it’s going to limit their job opportunities in these industries which is already hard to make it into in the first place.  This group discussed how AI is affecting our social lives. AI is replacing our human interactions by switching our usual comforts with people to artificial intelligence just like they did in the industries that I just talked about.

My group was the next group that presented and we talked about how artificial intelligence is affecting our economy and mental health. My groupmates who talked about the economy discussed how AI is affecting it. According to them, there will be a decrease in jobs that involve interacting with people. This is sad as it limits job opportunities by a lot. No wonder a lot of people are worried about artificial intelligence. It’s affecting their jobs... their lives. What are people going to do without them? How will people make a living? Thankfully my groupmates found the answers to these questions. With the rise of artificial intelligence, there will be a growth in jobs that involve technology. At least there will be another way for us to make a living in the future, but still. Now we’ll be limited to what career we can choose. Right now, the options are limitless, but in the future, we’ll have to choose something that’s within the technology category. The good thing is that the government has an A.I. resource management that will determine the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence and address new and existing laws that will be affected. Thankfully the government is keeping up to date with AI and whether or not it's benefiting us in certain areas or negatively impacting us. One of the benefits of AI is that it should increase our economy in the future by trillions of dollars. This is very important as our economy has been negatively affected by Covid-19. Let’s move on to mental health and AI. I learned that AI has access to patient history. I don’t know how I feel about this. On one hand, it’ll be easier to find a patient's files but on the other, someone can hack the system and have access to everyone’s medical information. However, since AI can diagnose a patient and create a treatment plan. This is good as it will probably be quicker for the AI to solve it than a doctor, but I wouldn’t know whether I’d trust the diagnosis. I’d want a doctor to double-check the AI’s answer and course of action for treatment. There is also an AI who you can chat with that’s a chatbot. I understand that some people would feel more comfortable saying how they truly feel behind a screen because they’re afraid of being judged, but I prefer human-to-human interaction.

The last group that presented talked about how AI is being used in education and sports. They started off by talking about how AI helped us during COVID-19 when schooling had to be done virtually. This was crucial for us to continue our education without having to take a gap in our learning. This is a good thing about AI because, without it, everyone's graduation years would have been pushed back. Even though AI helped us, it also made us more reliant on technology. With this more students became prompt to use AI for their school assignments. Basically, from this, students became more reliant on technology and less reliant on their brains. So, the student’s education has depleted in a way. I see this in high school, as students will use AI platforms such as Chat GPT to do their class assignments for them. They took something and used it in a way thinking “Oh, I’m just using it for this assignment. It’s no big deal” when in reality it’s a big deal. What was once an assignment with AI became multiple as the lesson they used the AI for, to begin with, is a stepping stone for what they’re learning. When you don’t understand one thing, you can’t continue. So, using AI will negatively affect them in their future learning habits. Although there is this negative to AI making it easier for students to cheat, I learned that there is AI that can teach you. This is good if you don’t understand a lesson in class, you can ask the AI. I know the feeling of being afraid of asking the teacher a question because of the judgment I thought I would receive if it was considered a “stupid” question. Moving on to sports. This group talked about how sports were being transformed by AI. AI is being used to provide teams with data insights to make better decisions on the field for players. This is great as it can improve a player's proficiency. AI can also analyze an opponent's strategies and weaknesses and adjust the gameplay according to them. This is good as it can lead a team to victory, but if you can see the other team's weakness, they can also see yours. So, I don’t know whether this is a benefit or not, as weaknesses can change. AI can also analyze players to see who a sports team should trade, draft, or sign. This is good for the team, but I also believe this is negative for the players as they could be traded because an AI told them that they aren’t as good at playing as other players.

Overall, I have learned a lot about AI from my fellow classmates. It was interesting to see what is going on in the United States with technology constantly evolving and what the government is doing to keep up.
